The Facet Seven® Fitness philosophy is centered on a simple truth: fitness isn’t just about looking or performing better; it’s about building the health, mobility and independence needed to live comfortably for years to come

Co-owner and coach Layn Chess first turned his focus to longevity after watching his grandfather’s health decline. While helping him exercise in a small apartment gym, Layn saw firsthand how much he struggled. It led him to wonder, “What if his strength and mobility had been built years earlier?”

In 2010, after his grandfather passed away, Layn began questioning whether goals such as lifting increasingly heavy weights or achieving a certain physique actually prepared someone for a long, healthy life

That question led him through several different approaches, including powerlifting, bodybuilding and endurance sports. Each taught him something, and also revealed negative aspects when taken to extreme lengths. In endurance sports, for example, he saw people continuing to run through injuries simply because they felt they needed to maintain their mileage

Through his own training, Layn began experimenting with how much strength was necessary to improve endurance performance without compromising it. That eventually led him to functional training

“Functional training is training your body to be as usable as possible,” he said

Layn then influenced co-owner and coach Jeraldine Ollervides, who is now Layn’s wife, to try functional training. She had a bodybuilding and strength-training background, and when she began training with him, he introduced her to a different approach. She quickly noticed that she felt more stable, and eventually began incorporating functional training into her own routine

Running was another turning point. Jeraldine had struggled with shin splints when she ran, but Layn identified issues with her running technique and helped her change both her form and footwear. Within about two weeks, her shin splints were gone

The experience opened the door to endurance activities she had never considered. She eventually joined Layn for the Texas Independence Relay, completing roughly 20 miles over a day and a half despite never having run a marathon or half marathon

The experience demonstrated how functional training can expand what the human body is capable of doing and eventually led to Facet Seven® Fitness’ Holy Trifecta training model, centered on strength, cardio and flexibility

How does the Holy Trifecta model support long-term health?

Facet Seven®’s strength, HIIT and yoga classes are designed as pieces of one larger program rather than separate workouts. The strength class develops strength, HIIT addresses cardiovascular fitness, and yoga supports flexibility and recovery

The key is that the classes are programmed together. Instead of instructors independently creating workouts that may repeatedly stress the same muscles or movements, Facet Seven® coordinates the programming so each class complements the others

For example, strength training may target the legs on a particular day, while the corresponding yoga class focuses on recovering the hips and knees. The result is a group fitness experience designed to function more like an individualized training plan

“It’s like having a custom personal training program in a group setting, and I will tell you confidently that you cannot find this anywhere else,” Layn said

    The programming also changes seasonally

“We do endurance training in the summer, functional training in the fall, strength training in the winter and hypertrophy training in the spring,” Chess said

    What is the LongevityMe™ program?

LongevityMe™ takes the concept further by looking at what is happening inside and outside the body. For $333 per month, members complete bi-annual functional blood labs and a physical assessment called the FEQ, giving the team information about internal health as well as movement, joints and physical capabilities

Rather than applying the same exercise framework to everyone, Facet Seven® uses that information to identify individual areas of improvement and customize training accordingly. The goal is to understand where a person is starting and then build a plan around that individual’s needs

How is Facet Seven® educating the broader community on longevity?

Facet Seven® is preparing to release Nutrition for Longevity, a seven-chapter educational series designed to make complicated nutrition concepts easier to understand and apply. The series explains how the body metabolizes food, the role of macronutrients and different approaches to eating

The entire series can be completed in less than an hour, reflecting Facet Seven®’s goal of turning complex information into practical knowledge

How will Facet Seven® expand its approach?

Chess sees the systems developed at Facet Seven® as something that could eventually reach beyond its own locations. The company is exploring a franchise model that could help new gyms adopt its frameworks or allow existing independent gyms to strengthen their systems, programming and coaching

That includes the Holy Trifecta, LongevityMe™ and Facet Seven® concept, which says that there are six facets to fitness:

    • Agility

    • Core

    • Endurance

    • Toning

    • Strength

And once all six facets are complete, the individual reaches Facet Seven®: Complete Fitness

Through their work, Layn and Jeraldine focus on giving people more than a workout. They help them understand their bodies, make informed choices and build habits that support how they want to live for years to come

    A quick recap FAQ

Why should fitness training prioritize longevity over performance or appearance?

Most training goals, such as lifting heavier, losing weight or hitting a pace, don’t necessarily prepare the body for decades of daily life. Training for longevity means building a body that stays strong, mobile and independent for years to come

What is functional training, and how is it different from traditional gym workouts?

Functional training focuses on making the body as usable as possible, building strength and mobility to support everyday movement. At Facet Seven® Fitness, that means combining strength, cardio and flexibility in a coordinated program rather than treating them as separate goals

How does Facet Seven® Fitness train clients for long-term health?

Facet Seven® Fitness uses a Holy Trifecta model: strength, HIIT and yoga programmed together so each class supports the others rather than competing with them. The programming changes seasonally and is coordinated across instructors to avoid repeatedly stressing the same muscles. For members who want a deeper look at their health, the LongevityMe™ program ($333/month) adds bi-annual blood labs and a physical assessment called the FEQ to customize training around each person’s individual data.
