PETALING JAYA: Community health screening programmes are proving to be more than just routine medical check-ups, with government hospitals detecting seven common but often undiagnosed health conditions among participants

Hospital Sultan Idris Shah, Serdang (HSIS) board of visitors chairman Datuk Dr Alagendran RS Vengadeson (pic) said previous community screening programmes had uncovered cases of hypertension, diabetes, anaemia, cancer, obesity, dental caries and mental health issues

Urging the public, especially those who have not undergone a medical check-up recently, to take advantage of a free health screening by the HSIS on Aug 8, Dr Alagendran said early detection remains the best defence against chronic diseases

“Community screening programmes such as these provide an opportunity for people to undergo basic health checks at no cost while receiving advice from healthcare professionals on preventing disease and recognising warning signs early.”

Dr Alagendran said regular health screenings were crucial as they enabled early detection of diseases and risk factors, enabling prompt intervention and significantly improving patient outcomes

The HSIS free community health screening programme on Aug 8 will be held between 8am and 5pm at the Puchong Convention Hall. It is open to all Malaysians

Health tests for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index checks, eye screening and nutrition counselling will be offered

Also available are early lump detection, smoking cessation services, medication counselling, vector-borne disease education, mental health and cancer awareness
