Gold card health scheme to cover obesity surgery

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has expanded benefits under the Universal Coverage Scheme, commonly known as the 30-baht gold card scheme, to include surgery for patients with severe obesity who meet strict medical criteria
Deputy government spokeswoman Ploythalay Laksameesaengjan said yesterday the scheme provides equitable access to healthcare for more than 47 million people, covering a wide range of medical conditions, from common illnesses to costly chronic diseases
She said surveys have also shown high levels of public satisfaction with the programme, with many beneficiaries praising its affordability, reduced financial burden and improved access to healthcare services
Ms Ploythalay said the government has added bariatric surgery as a covered benefit for eligible patients with severe obesity, to further strengthen the healthcare system
The move is aimed at helping patients lose weight, reducing the severity of obesity-related diseases and lowering the risk of serious health complications
Ms Ploythalay said bariatric surgery is a medically necessary treatment rather than a cosmetic procedure and is not appropriate for everyone
Patients must undergo a medical assessment that considers their body mass index (BMI), obesity-related conditions, treatment history, physical and mental health and ability to maintain long-term post-operative care
Patients must be 18 to 65 years old and meet the required medical criteria for severe obesity
