After years of planning, Moundsville marked the start of construction on its new recreation center with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. —After years of planning, Moundsville marked the start of construction on its new recreation center with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday

Work on the project began two weeks ago. Once completed, the new facility is expected to offer amenities for the entire community, including multiple indoor sports and fitness options

“The indoor fitness center will have two full size basketball courts,’ City manager Rick Healy said. “It’ll have pickleball courts and volleyball courts. There’s a two-lane walking track around it, there’s a fitness area and a community room that will be used for rentals and parties, thinks like that.”

The project is being funded by the city along with support from several other partners. Healy said one of those contributions came from the Vawter family, a Moundsville family who created a foundation after the death of their son with the goal of helping local children

“The family put some money away into a foundation and we benefited from that,” Healy said. “They wanted something for kids to do in Moundsville with that money, and so they graciously gave us $500,000 and we have a lot of those family members here today.”

The project is expected to be completed by April 14 of next year

A genetic marker already used to flag risk of a life-threatening reaction to the antibiotic vancomycin also identifies patients at risk of that reaction to lamotrigine — and it is missing from the gene panels clinicians order before prescribing the drug, Vanderbilt Health-led researchers report Sept. 2 in JAMA Network Open
