DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — The thrill of competition, the energy of friends and family cheering from the sidelines and the chance to push past personal limits are all reasons Robert Kramer loves Hyrox

Now, Kramer is bringing that spirit of competition to Freedom Pointe CrossFit with a Half-Rox event designed to welcome athletes of all abilities

A Half-Rox is like a Hyrox, but cut in half of distance. The weight still remains the same however, determined by the runners division

The eight stations in order are:

    -500m run, Ski-erg machine (500m)

    -500m run, Sled push (25m)

    -500m run, Sled pull (25m)

    -500m run, Burpee broadjump (40m)

    -500m run, Row-erg machine (500m)

    -500m run, Farmers carry (100m)

-500m run, Sandbag Walking Lunges (50m)

-500m run, Wall ball (50 reps)

Kramer said the goal goes beyond the workout itself. He hopes the event helps people find a supportive community and build connections that can last well beyond the gym

“So really, it forms friendships, lifelong friendships,” Kramer said. “We’ve had families built here, people get married, couples start here.”

For Kramer, hosting the event is personal. He said CrossFit helped him get back into shape after having children, and now he enjoys helping others discover they are capable of more than they may initially believe

“I love helping people to the point where they’re like, ‘I don’t think I can do that,’” Kramer said. “And then all of a sudden, bam, they’re doing it.”

A Half-Rox is a shortened version of a Hyrox-style fitness race, combining running with a series of challenging functional exercises. Participants can test their endurance, strength and determination while receiving encouragement from coaches, friends and fellow athletes

Evelyn Huff, a coach at Freedom Point CrossFit, said it is common for first-time participants to arrive feeling nervous. But she said that uncertainty often turns into confidence once they experience the support of the gym community

“People love coming out, whether they’re here or somewhere else, and just getting to get cheered on by the people,” Huff said. “People love the competitiveness, and it’s a fun way to push yourself.”

Events like the Half-rox can be challenging. For athletes like Johnny Charles, though, that challenge is exactly what makes events like Half-Rox meaningful

“You learn who you are, like really to the core,” Charles said. “I think it’s easy to think you can do something and then see others doing it and then go, ‘There’s no way you can do that.’ And the only true way to find out is to go train for it and go test your abilities.”

Whether participants are trying to beat a previous time, searching for a supportive fitness community or simply looking to leave stronger than they arrived, Kramer said there is a place for everyone at Freedom Pointe CrossFit
