Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: Structured Exercise After Cancer Treatment Can Improve Survival and Reduce Healthcare Costs
Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, President of Oncology101.org, Adjunct Professor at Edwardon LinkedIn, adding:
“This is especially important for rural cancer care
Structured exercise after cancer treatment is not simply an ‘extra’. This study in patients with colon cancer shows that exercise can improve survival while also reducing healthcare costs—-an outcome rarely seen with a new cancer intervention
In rural communities, patients often face greater barriers to supportive care, including transportation challenges, long travel distances, limited rehabilitation services, and financial strain. That is why accessible, community-based exercise oncology programs matter
At Self Regional Healthcare, we have seen how supervised exercise can help patients rebuild strength, mobility, confidence, and independence close to home. The next step is to make exercise oncology a standard part of cancer care-not a service available only to patients who live near major academic centers
Where a patient lives should not determine whether they can benefit from evidence-based supportive cancer care

“Last year, Sami (Papacek) Mansfield and Nigel Brockton walked me through the CHALLENGE trial…to see the forest for the trees. This paper in JCOP really shows the math. The cost per QALY relative to other interventions in oncology should open some eyes. High value! Check out Figure 3.”
