W.Va. (WSAZ) – Local and state officials gathered Thursday afternoon for a groundbreaking ceremony along state Route 2, marking the official start of construction on a new $40 million long-term healthcare facility

The future Barboursville Healthcare Center, a 60,000-square-foot facility, will be operated by Communicare. The state-of-the-art nursing and rehabilitation center will feature 124 licensed beds and is designed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of seniors and families throughout the region

“Today we are breaking ground on much more than a building,” said Ronald Wilheim, Long Term Care Division President of Communicare. “It’s about investing in the people and families and the future of healthcare in this community.”

Cabell County Commissioner Kelli Sobonya welcomed the company to the area during the ceremony

“We believe that your company is an outstanding fit for our region and we are excited about the future that we will build together,” Sobonya said

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey also attended the event, highlighting the impact of the modern facility’s up-to-date equipment and patient-centered services

“We’re looking through the lens of the people who are going to be benefiting from good services, up to date equipment and that’s why this is incredible,” Morrisey said. “I’m hopeful this is yet just another step of many of West Virginia’s comeback.”

In addition to expanding regional healthcare services and providing ree 150 jobs in the community
