Research over the past 15 years has expanded scientists’ understanding of how dietary interventions may affect neurological health. One area of interest is the potential role of ketone bodies as an alternativeproblem that can occur in some neurodegenerative conditions

A review published in Translational Neurodegeneration examines evidence on ketogenic diets and their potential effects in conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. While early findings are promising, the diet has not been established as a treatment that can reverse or stop the progression of these diseases

    Ketones as an alternative fuel

The brain typically relies heavily on glucose for energy. A ketogenic diet, which is high in fat and very low in carbohydrates, shifts the body’s metabolism toward using fat as an energycetoacetate (AcAc), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and acetone

Researchers are studying whether these compounds can provide an alternative fuel for brain cells affected by neurodegenerative diseases. In conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, as well as multiple sclerosis, nerve cells and neural pathways can become damaged over time. Impaired energy metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation and the accumulation of abnormal proteins may contribute to this process

Ketone bodies may help supply energy to the brain while also influencing cellular processes involved in protecting neurons

    Effects beyond energy metabolism

Research suggests that ketogenic diets may affect more than the brain’s energy supply. The diet can alter the gut microbiome, potentially reducing some inflammatory microorganisms and supporting bacteria associated with intestinal barrier function

Studies have also examined whether ketosis can stimulate autophagy, a cellular recycling process that helps break down damaged components. Additionally, ketogenic diets may affect oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which have been implicated in neurodegenerative disease

    What human studies have found

Some clinical studies have reported improvements in areas such as memory, daily functioning, quality of life, fatigue or motor symptoms among people with neurological disorders who followed ketogenic or modified ketogenic diets

However, the diet can be difficult to maintain over the long term. Some people experience headaches, fatigue, nausea and dizziness when they first begin a ketogenic diet, symptoms commonly referred to as the «keto flu.»

    More research is needed

The ketogenic diet is attracting growing interest as a potential complementary approach to neurological disease, and preclinical research has identified several mechanisms that could explain its effects. But important questions remain about its long-term effectiveness, safety, appropriate formulation and which patients might benefit most

Top 3 benefits of aerobic and strength training for chronic disease prevention

    By healthylife7August 17, 20260

Examining the association between aerobic physical activity, muscle-strengthening activities and the development of chronic conditions, University of Queensland-led research — conducted in collaboration with Bond University and Griffith University — has found that muscle-strengthening exercises appear to provide significant health benefits beyond doing aerobic activity alone. With a sample of over 8000 Brisbane adults over…
