ST. LOUIS – Nestlé Purina PetCare has partnered with the Senior Dog Veterinary Society to provide veterinary professionals with education and re senior pets continues to grow

The collaboration will provide veterinary teams with access to nutrition-focused webinars, continuing education opportunities and clinical reinitiative aims to help veterinarians better address age-related changes in muscle condition, mobility, cognition and digestive health through personalized nutrition strategies

More than half of U.S. dog-owning households now have a senior dog, according to data cited by Purina, underscoring the growing need for specialized care as pets live longer lives

“Senior dogs are not simply adult dogs who have reached a certain birthday,” said Dr. RuthAnn Lobos, senior veterinarian at Purina. “Subtle changes in muscle condition, mobility, cognition and digestive health may begin before a more significant decline, creating an important opportunity for veterinary teams to take a more proactive approach to senior dog care, especially through nutrition.”

Because dogs age at different rates depending on breed, size, genetics, and environment, there is no universally recognized senior life stage or standardized nutritional profile for older dogs. Purina said that makes individualized nutrition, developed with veterinary nutritionists and backed by scientific research, an increasingly important part of healthy aging

As part of the partnership, Purina will offer members of the Senior Dog Veterinary Society RACE-approved continuing education webinars led by board-certified veterinary nutritionists. The first session, “Feeding the Healthy Senior Dog: Nutrition Strategies for Proactive Aging,” will be presented by Purina veterinary nutritionist Dr. Martha Cline on August 6

“Senior dogs don’t wake up one day and suddenly become old,” said Dr. Monica Tarantino, co-founder of the Senior Dog Veterinary Society. “They change gradually, and nutrition is one of the ways we can support them through that process. I’m excited to partner with Purina to help veterinary professionals better understand how nutrition fits into proactive senior care.”

Purina said the collaboration aims to equip veterinary professionals with practical nutritional strategies to support healthy aging and personalized care for senior canine patients
