In the conÂstant purÂsuit of poÂlitÂiÂcal powÂer, ecoÂnomÂic growth, techÂnoÂlogÂiÂcal adÂvanceÂment and sciÂenÂtifÂic achieveÂment, conÂcern for the most vulÂnerÂaÂble memÂbers of soÂciÂety ofÂten reÂceives far less atÂtenÂtion than it deÂserves. Yet, the way a naÂtion treats those left beÂhind reÂmains one of the clearÂest meaÂsures of its huÂmanÂiÂty
A reÂcent Trinidad & ToÂbaÂgo Guardian reÂport on forÂmer First LaÂdy ZaÂlayÂhar HasÂsanali serves as a timeÂly reÂminder of that reÂsponÂsiÂbilÂiÂty. At 95 years old, Mrs HasÂsanali, the wife of forÂmer presÂiÂdent Noor HasÂsanali, conÂtinÂues to deÂvote herÂself to imÂprovÂing the lives of the disÂplaced, the disÂenÂfranÂchised and those livÂing on soÂciÂety’s marÂgins. Her dedÂiÂcaÂtion is an exÂamÂple worÂthy of naÂtionÂal recogÂniÂtion
Why should such efÂforts matÂter to the wider soÂciÂety? BeÂcause the probÂlems they adÂdress afÂfect us all. Too ofÂten, our atÂtenÂtion is conÂsumed by polÂiÂtics, ecoÂnomÂic perÂforÂmance and the strugÂgle for inÂfluÂence, while poverÂty, exÂcluÂsion and soÂcial deÂcline are treatÂed as secÂondary conÂcerns. As a reÂsult, the valÂue we place on huÂman digÂniÂty steadiÂly erodes
This trend is evÂiÂdent across the world. The deaths of inÂnoÂcent civilÂians, inÂcludÂing chilÂdren caught in conÂflicts, are freÂquentÂly reÂduced to staÂtisÂtics and disÂmissed as unÂforÂtuÂnate conÂseÂquences of war. HuÂman sufÂferÂing losÂes its urÂgency when soÂciÂety beÂcomes deÂsenÂsiÂtised to it
ClosÂer to home, the growÂing visÂiÂbilÂiÂty of homeÂlessÂness and vaÂgrancy should conÂcern us all. Across our towns and cities are peoÂple who have fallÂen through the cracks of soÂciÂety, many batÂtling poverÂty, menÂtal illÂness, adÂdicÂtion or perÂsonÂal tragedy. Yet, their plight ofÂten proÂvokes litÂtle more than passÂing noÂtice
The work of Mrs HasÂsanali, the Adult LitÂerÂaÂcy TeachÂers AsÂsoÂciÂaÂtion, the many orÂganÂiÂsaÂtions with which she has been afÂfilÂiÂatÂed, and nuÂmerÂous othÂer NGOs demonÂstrates that anÂothÂer apÂproach is posÂsiÂble. By proÂvidÂing edÂuÂcaÂtion, supÂport and opÂporÂtuÂniÂties for reÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion, they help reÂstore hope and digÂniÂty to those who have lost their footÂing
HowÂevÂer, awareÂness alone is not <a href="https://healthylife7.com/are-calcium-and-vitamin-d-enough-for-bone-health/” title=”Are Calcium and Vitamin D Enough for Bone Health?”>enough. ComÂpasÂsion must be transÂlatÂed inÂto acÂtion. The chalÂlenge reÂquires more than ocÂcaÂsionÂal charÂiÂtaÂble doÂnaÂtions or acts of goodÂwill. It deÂmands susÂtained and coÂorÂdiÂnatÂed efÂforts inÂvolvÂing govÂernÂment, busiÂnessÂes, reÂliÂgious orÂganÂiÂsaÂtions, comÂmuÂniÂty groups and inÂdiÂvidÂual citÂiÂzens
GovÂernÂment must strengthÂen proÂgrammes aimed at both preÂvenÂtion and reÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion. EfÂforts should foÂcus not onÂly on helpÂing those alÂready livÂing on the streets, but alÂso on adÂdressÂing the conÂdiÂtions that place inÂdiÂvidÂuÂals at risk of homeÂlessÂness and soÂcial exÂcluÂsion in the first place
SimÂiÂlarÂly, NGOs must conÂtinÂue to balÂance reÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion with preÂvenÂtion. HelpÂing peoÂple reÂcovÂer is viÂtal, but preÂventÂing vulÂnerÂaÂble inÂdiÂvidÂuÂals from driftÂing toÂwards homeÂlessÂness, crime or gang inÂvolveÂment is equalÂly imÂporÂtant
LoÂcal govÂernÂment bodÂies alÂso have a critÂiÂcal role to play. EfÂfecÂtive comÂmuÂniÂty-based iniÂtiaÂtives reÂquire strong partÂnerÂships beÂtween muÂnicÂiÂpalÂiÂties, soÂcial agenÂcies and civÂil soÂciÂety orÂganÂiÂsaÂtions
Mrs HasÂsanali and her asÂsoÂciates have shown what dedÂiÂcatÂed serÂvice can achieve. Their exÂamÂple ofÂfers a clear path forÂward. If Trinidad and ToÂbaÂgo is to preÂvent a deepÂer slide inÂto soÂcial neÂglect and inÂhuÂmanÂiÂty, their efÂforts must inÂspire a broadÂer naÂtionÂal comÂmitÂment to proÂtectÂing the digÂniÂty and well-beÂing of all
