‘Tell us what’s going on,’ Kentucky governor urges McConnell on health

Mitch McConnell “continues his recovery in the hospital,” his office said Saturday, July 11, offering the same update similar to what it has given for weeks even as new details emerge about the morning the U.S. senator was rushed to the hospital
“As you can imagine, we have been receiving lots of messages from folks, and as the senator continues to recover, we will be sure to keep you updated,” a spokesperson said, according to reports from WDRB and WAVE
The spokesperson added that McConnell “appreciates the outpouring of support” and “is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
Saturday’s statement came as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear continued to press for information about the health of the U.S. senator who represents his state
“Let’s end the crazy speculation. Just tell us what’s going on,” Beshear wrote in a social media post July 11
The 84-year-old Republican senator was hospitalized on June 14, and his office has offered little beyond confirming that he remains under care. Weeks later, questions about what happened that morning remain largely unanswered by his team
USA TODAY reached out to McConnell’s office for comment but did not immediately receive a response
What the 911 call adds
The unanswered questions extend to the scene outside McConnell’s home the morning he was hospitalized. CNN reported that one of the senator’s neighbors, who was not named by the outlet, filmed video of the ambulance outside his home
Audio from the original 911 call appeared to indicate McConnell was unconscious when emergency crews were dispatched, and the dispatcher requested an advanced life support response. It remains one of the only concrete details to emerge about the severity of what happened that day
Beshear renews push for transparency
Bipartisan concern has sparked calls for transparency, including from Beshear, who is calling on the senator to speak publicly about his condition. In a letter sent to McConnell’s office, the Democratic governor said Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the senator’s health and asked him to share an update
“I publicly and privately urged the last administration to address the public’s concerns with the former president’s health,” Beshear wrote in a post to X on July 11, referring to former President Joe Biden, whose health faced intense scrutiny
“I’m calling on Sen. McConnell to do the same and provide voters an update on his own health,” the governor said
