Jurors in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy spent much of the past week hearing testimony from psychiatrists, therapists and other medical professionals as attorneys continued to battle over whether the Massachusetts mother was experiencing postpartum psychosis when her three children were killed in 2023, Newsweek reported

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, does not dispute that her three children died at the family’s home in Duxbury. Instead, her defense team argues that severe mental illness, including postpartum psychosis, left her unable to understand reality or appreciate the consequences of her actions. Prosecutors contend she remains criminally responsible and acted deliberately in the deaths of her children, Associated Press said

The case has drawn national attention because it combines allegations of one of the country’s most tragic family crimes with questions about how postpartum mental health conditions are recognized and treated. Adding to public interest is the support Clancy has received from her former husband, Patrick Clancy, who has also criticized the medical care she received before the killings, according to Boston 25 News

During testimony Friday, psychiatrists who evaluated Clancy before the deaths told jurors they did not diagnose her with postpartum psychosis. Several providers testified that although Clancy reported anxiety, sleep issues and other mental health struggles, they did not observe symptoms they believed justified such a diagnosis at the time

Medical providers described Clancy as someone who sought treatment and communicated concerns about her mental health. Testimony revealed she received multiple psychiatric medications in the months before the killings, an issue that has become a major component of the defense’s argument that her condition was inadequately managed

Jurors also heard descriptions of Clancy from friends, relatives and professionals who interacted with her before the killings. Several witnesses characterized her as a devoted and attentive mother, while others recalled conversations in which she expressed concerns about her mental health and the effects of various medications

The deaths occurred Jan. 24, 2023, when prosecutors say Clancy killed her children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan. Afterward, authorities say, she attempted suicide by injuring herself and jumping from a second-story window. She survived but was left paralyzed from the waist down

The trial has featured emotional testimony and graphic evidence, prompting Judge William Sullivan to repeatedly remind jurors that their verdict must be based on law and evidence rather than sympathy or emotion. Court proceedings became tense at times as attorneys sparred over evidence presentation and courtroom conduct

Mental health experts following the case say it highlights broader questions surrounding postpartum psychiatric disorders, which can be difficult to diagnose and may present differently from patient to patient. Specialists have testified that some individuals experiencing psychosis can appear outwardly functional while struggling with severe internal symptoms, including hallucinations or delusions

Experts have also pointed to persistent gaps in maternal mental health care, arguing that women experiencing severe postpartum symptoms can face challenges obtaining timely diagnoses and treatment. The issue has become a central theme in the trial, which many observers say could influence future discussions about maternal mental health and criminal responsibility

As testimony continues, jurors must ultimately decide whether Clancy’s mental condition at the time of the killings was so severe that she cannot be held criminally responsible under Massachusetts law, or whether prosecutors have proven she acted with criminal intent when her children died
