Maharashtra Food Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has publicly criticized multinational food and beverage companies for applying dual nutrition standards across different global markets, urging corporations to adopt ethical practices beyond basic regulatory compliance. His comments follow a Reuters report exposing significant variations in ingredient profiles and sugar levels between products sold in India and Western nations, such as a can of Fanta containing 185 calories and three times the sugar content in India compared to a same-sized offering in London.
Questioning the disparity, Mundhe emphasized that multinational entities hold a broader societal obligation to public health rather than relying strictly on the minimum legal requirements of developing markets. In a statement to Reuters, Mundhe asked where ethics fit into corporate operations when maintaining inconsistent standards for the same product lines globally, as major market players including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé declined to issue comments in response
The regulator’s comments come amid ongoing enforcement actions led by Mundhe across Maharashtra, where FDA officials have executed widespread inspections and temporarily shut non-compliant outlets including major chains like Domino’s and McDonald’s over hygiene and standard violations. Mundhe also pushed back against industry lobbying that delayed mandatory front-of-pack warning labels in India, writing on LinkedIn that preventive health labeling respects consumer intelligence rather than relying on medical intervention after individuals fall ill.
