The US Military did not set out to stock a high school program. Woodbine High School still got an indoor field. The Iowa Tigers play 8-man football in a town under 2,000 people. They now practice like a Power Five shop
The partnership isn’t completely new. It started in 2022. The 185th Air Refueling Wing ran a readiness drill. Airmen raised a giant tension-fabric hall on bare ground. In a war zone, that building would be shelter. In western Iowa, it became a gym

Woodbine enrolls fewer than 200 kids in grades 9-12. The whole district sits under 600. Sports come and go with turnout. Football stays. Last fall the Tigers went 11-1. They lost only in the state title game
US Military Turned a Guard Drill Into a Tiger Advantage

The Department of Defense approved three Innovative Readiness Training projects nationwide. Woodbine landed one. Iowa Air National Guard civil engineers assembled the donated 30,000-square-foot shell. Official Guard coverage called it practice for real deployments
Superintendent Justin Wagner bridged both worlds. He ran the school. He also served as vice wing commander. He is now a brigadier general in the Iowa Air National Guard

“The training value is saying OK, you’ve got a bare piece of land,”Wagner said. “How do you get this structure up, how do you get this structure erect, how does it stay erect, how does it stay robust and then how do you heat and cool it?”
Troops from across the country then lived in that hall. They built a 45,000-square-foot STEM building next door. They ran HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work. Those are the same skills needed on a remote base. When IGNITE Pathways opened, the fabric barn flipped to athletics
Woodbine is the only Iowa high school program with an indoor practice field. Other high school upgrades cost tens of millions. This one came from a training mission
US Military Facility Now Feeds a Penn State Pipeline

Senior Landon Blum works inside that building every day. He is Iowa’s top prospect. He is a four-star wideout committed to Penn State. A recent video shows him catching balls off a JUGS machine. He says he takes 200 to 300 reps daily

That kind of volume used to die in Iowa winters. Ice and wind used to own practice. The US Military shell changed the calendar. Eight-man rules already create space and points. An 80-by-40 field rewards skill. Blum’s one-handed scores put tiny Woodbine on national boards
The Tigers want the title they missed in 2025. They have one more year with Blum. They also have a facility no other Iowa school can match. The US Military trained. The town kept the building. Friday nights in Woodbine now start indoors
