Va. (WVIR) – Researchers at UVA Health have identified a promising approach to improving care for brain tumors using focused ultrasound — carefully aimed sound waves — to help drugs reach their target

The research team is measuring how briefly opening the blood-brain barrier with sound waves can allow medicine to pass through

Richard Price, a professor of radiology and medical imaging, said the findings open new possibilities for drug design

“It will give us the ability now to think about how we design specific pharmaceutics that can work best with focused ultrasound,” Price said. “We have identified sort of a size range that is a little bit larger than we thought it is, which is potentially a good thing. Because it’s starting to move into a size range of a drug class known as biologics, which are things like antibodies.”

The current work is focused on glioblastoma models. Researchers said they hope the first trials could focus on lung cancer that has spread to the brain
