Your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life may be linked to how much sugar you consumed before your second birthday. A new study published in npj Aging found that people with lower sugar intakes during their first 1,000 days — from conception to about age 2 — had lower rates of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and anxiety later in life
Researchers were able to use the historic rationing of sugar during World War II in the United Kingdom to measure this effect. Until 1953, rations kept sugar consumption near current dietary guidelines, and children under age 2 received no separate sugar allowance. When rationing ended in September 1953, adult sugar consumption nearly doubled, from about 41 to 80 grams per day, while children’s consumption of candy more than doubled. This national shift in eating habits allowed researchers to compare people exposed to sugar restrictions early in life with those born after rations were lifted.
After analyzing health records from 60,394 UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956, the researchers found that those born during the period of rationing had a 27% lower risk of dementia from any cause and a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared with those born after rationing ended. People born during rationing also had an 11% lower risk of depression and a 20% lower risk of anxiety, while rates of Parkinson’s disease did not differ between the groups. The associations were strongest among participants whose sugar intake was restricted after birth rather than only during pregnancy.
How early sugar intake may impact brain health
Researchers suggest that the association may stem from the role nutrition plays during a crucial period of brain development. “We believe the lasting protective effect is rooted in metabolic programming during the first 1,000 days — a critical window when the brain undergoes rapid development and is highly sensitive to nutritional cues,” senior author Bing Zhang, a geriatric medicine researcher at Guangzhou Medical University, told ScienceAlert

The researchers also analyzed brain scans from a subset of participants, finding that adults exposed to sugar rationing after birth had brains that appeared, on average, about four months younger than their chronological age. They also had larger hippocampal and thalamic volumes, measures associated with memory and cognitive function

Zhang suggests that the association may be related to inflammation and metabolic health. “Early high sugar intake predisposes to insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation, both of which are well-established risk factors for dementia,” he told ScienceAlert
What the research can’t prove about sugar and dementia
Because the study was observational, the findings show an association and do not prove that limiting sugar early in life prevents dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, or anxiety. The researchers also noted that UK Biobank participants — volunteers in the large-scale health research database established in 2006 — are predominantly white and generally in better health than the broader population, so the findings may not apply to all groups
Still, Zhang said the team is “quite confident” that sugar restriction played a significant role in the outcomes the study observed. While he stopped short of recommending that people avoid sugar during pregnancy or limit their children’s sugar intake, he suggested that reducing early-life sugar consumption may be a “long-term investment in brain health decades later.”
