    • Many breakfast items marketed as healthy, such as flavored yogurt and granola, contain more sugar than a standard glazed donut.
    • Acai bowls, bottled iced tea, and jarred sauces are among the surprising foods with high sugar content, with some containing more sugar than six glazed donuts.
    • Even seemingly nutritious options like sports drinks and smoothie bottles can have high sugar levels, making it important for consumers to check labels for hidden sugars.

You probably think you know which breakfast items are the “bad” ones. A donut is obviously a treat. A cup of yogurt is obviously fine. But sugar doesn’t care about your assumptions, and a lot of foods sold on health claims are packing more of it than a standard glazed donut, which runs about 10 grams of sugar per donut. Here are 11 that will make you double-check the label next time

    Flavored Yogurt

A single cup of Yoplait Original Strawberry yogurt carries 18 grams of sugar. That’s almost double the donut, and you’re probably reaching for it specifically because it feels like the responsible choice

    Granola

Bear Naked Granola Oats & Honey packs 15 grams of sugar into a half-cup serving. You’re probably pouring more than a half cup into your bowl, which means the real number on your breakfast table is even higher

    Breakfast Bars

Two Nature Valley Oats ‘n Dark Chocolate bars, the standard serving, contain 12 grams of sugar. It’s a smaller gap than some of the others on this list, but you’re still eating more sugar than a donut, standing at the counter instead of sitting down for an actual breakfast

A plate with sections of dried apricots, dried figs, raisins, and dried prunes—healthy foods high in sugar—arranged in groups.

    Dried Fruit

Dried fruit looks like a snack you can feel good about. A quarter cup of Ocean Spray Craisins has 29 grams of sugar, nearly three times what’s in the donut, because drying fruit concentrates its natural sugar, and then the sweetened versions add more on top

    GO LEAN Cereal

Kashi GO LEAN Crunch! cereal has 13 grams of sugar in a 3/4-cup serving, more than the donut, even from a cereal built around a high-protein, high-fiber pitch

    Acai Bowls

This is the one that should worry you most. A regular Jamba Acai Primo Bowl has 65 grams of sugar, more than six times the donut, mostly from the fruit purees and juice blend the bowl is built on before you add honey or granola on top

    Smoothie Bottles

A 15.2-ounce bottle of Naked Juice Green Machine has 53 grams of sugar. None of it is added sugar. It still hits your bloodstream the same way, because your body doesn’t check the label before absorbing it

Four plastic bottles with blue, red, yellow, and orange drinks—healthy foods high in sugar—are placed on ice cubes inside a cooler. All bottles have black caps.

    Sports Drinks

A 12-ounce bottle of Gatorade Thirst Quencher has 21 grams of added sugar. It’s built to fuel hard exercise, not a desk job, so unless you’re actually sweating through a workout, you’re drinking dessert with electrolytes

    Bottled Iced Tea

An 18.5-ounce bottle of Gold Peak Sweet Tea has 48 grams of sugar, almost five times the donut. Tea itself has zero calories, so whatever sweetness you’re tasting got added after the fact, not brewed in

A white Starbucks mug filled with coffee sits on a wooden surface surrounded by scattered coffee beans, evoking the cozy comfort often associated with healthy foods high in sugar.

    Flavored Coffee Drinks

A bottled Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino, the 9.5-ounce size, carries 32 grams of sugar. It’s coffee the way a milkshake is coffee, which is to say barely, once you count what’s actually sweetening it

    Jarred Sauces

Here’s the one nobody sees coming. Two tablespoons of Sweet Baby Ray’s Original Barbecue Sauce, a normal serving, has about 16 grams of sugar. That’s more than a donut, sitting in a squeeze bottle next to your ribs, with nothing on the front label warning you it’s basically candy with liquid smoke

    The Bottom Line

The pattern holds across all 11: sugar hides best inside foods that already sound healthy, because nobody thinks to check. Next time you reach for one of these, flip it over and read the actual number. The donut was never the problem. It was just the only one that was honest about what it was
