For months, Wendy logged onto AARP Wyoming’s free virtual exercise classes from home, working on her strength, coordination, and balance. She could see the progress little by little — stronger muscles, better coordination and a greater awareness of how she moved
Then came an unexpected test
Wendy was walking down a flight of stairs when she tripped and began to fall. But instead of taking a potentially serious tumble, she was able to catch herself without injury
Looking back on the moment, Wendy believes the strength, balance and mindfulness she practiced through AARP’s virtual exercise classes helped her body respond when she needed it most
“It all just came into play instinctively,” Wendy said

Building Strength, One Class at a Time
Wendy has participated in AARP’s virtual exercise offerings for several months, including strength-focused classes, Balance for Life, and Qigong, a practice incorporating gentle movement and mindfulness
The benefits did not happen overnight. Wendy remembers initially struggling with some of the movements and coordination
“I felt so uncoordinated,” she said
But she kept showing up
Over time, Wendy began noticing a difference in her body and her ability to complete the exercises
“I can see it. I have some muscles,” she said
More importantly, the classes encouraged Wendy to pay closer attention to how she moves — something that became particularly valuable when she found herself stumbling on the stairs
