Rabid fox confirmed in Havelock, Craven County Health issues advisory

A fox that tested positive for rabies was found in Havelock, prompting a public health advisory from the Craven County Health Department
According to the health department, the rabid fox was found on Ski Court and was displaying signs consistent with rabies before it was tested
Officials are asking anyone who may have been bitten or exposed to the animal’s saliva to contact their healthcare provider or the Craven County Health Department immediately for a rabies risk assessment
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop, but it can be prevented if treatment is started promptly after exposure
The health department is reminding residents to keep dogs, cats, and ferrets up to date on their rabies vaccinations, avoid contact with wildlife and stray animals, and report any animals showing unusual behavior to Craven County Animal Protective Services
Low-cost rabies vaccinations for pets are available through the Craven-Pamlico Animal Services Center. Residents with questions about potential rabies exposure can contact the Craven County Health Department at 252-636-4920
