Camp Grace: Hospital-based camp for kids with chronic illnesses now in eleventh year

(WJAR) —It’s all about child’s play in the vast healing garden at Hasbro Children’s hospital
“We’re showing kids the hospital does not have to be scary,” said Kerri Baker,Camp Grace coordinator at Hasbro Children’s Hospital
Especially since many of these kids spend so much time here

“He has a bleeding disorder,” said Jorge Pimentel, talking about his 8-year-old son Jordanni
“It makes it more comfortable for him to be used to being in the hospital. He enjoys his time here with all his friends,” said Pimentel
And Jordanni’s little brother Jomel gets to take part. It’s because siblings, too, get to attend Camp Grace
“So they’re getting to see what their brother or sister is going through here but in a very normative way and in a way that really helps them see that not everything thing that happens is so bad,” said Baker

This year, it’s a country western theme here at this four day, day camp, complete with customized cowboy hats
Majesty Mitchell. who was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder, can’t help but show of her hat and dance moves
“Play is the way a child learns so when we’re teaching them that the hospital can be a safe place, we’re doing a great justice for them and their family,” said Baker
