Four Flinders early career researchers have been named 2026 Young Tall Poppy Science Award winners, recognised for research tackling some of the big questions in health, science and our natural world

From improving outcomes for people with chronic disease to uncovering the hidden ecosystems that sustain life on Earth, their work shows the breadth and impact of the next generation of research at Flinders

(pictured left to right) Associate Professor Stephanie Harrison, Dr Jake Robinson, Dr Yohannes Melaku and Associate Professor Jacqueline Stephens have been honoured for their significant contributions to their respective fields of science and helping drive Australian research excellence

Their research tackles challenges spanning human health, healthcare equity and the ecosystems that sustain us:

    • Associate Professor Stephanie Harrison – improving health outcomes for older Australians.
    • Dr Jake Robinson – exploring the hidden ecosystems that keep people and the planet healthy, from microbes in our soils and gut to the air we breathe.
    • Dr Yohannes Melaku – investigating how nutrition and sleep work together to prevent chronic disease and improve wellbeing.
    • Associate Professor Jacqueline Stephens – identifying and removing barriers to equitable healthcare, particularly for regional and remote communities.

The Young Tall Poppy awards recognise the brilliant early career researchers who are fostering an appreciation for the sciences by communicating their work to the public in simple and accessible ways, while helping inspire future generations of scientific leaders

The four Flinders researchers are among a cohort of 10 South Australian scientists named Tall Poppys for 2026

Since its launch in 1998, the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) Tall Poppy program has recognised more than 1,200 young Australian scientists
