Pop star Ariana Grande confirmed she will be stepping back from the spotlight, amid growing concerns for the singer’s health

Grande is currently on her Eternal Sunshine tour, which is due to wrap up in London on September 1

After that, the 33-year-old will be taking a “much-deserved break” after facing “on-going public scrutiny”

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today

The statement came after fans expressed growing concern about Grande’s health and physical appearance, with speculation intensifying following the release of the music video for her latest single, Petal

While worried fans and commentators debated her weight and health, it sparked a broader cultural conversation about the ethics of public body-dissection versus genuine concern

A representative for the pop star said she would be stepping out of the public eye once her tour concludes.

The Feel Good Clinic principal clinical psychologist Mary Bonich told 7NEWS.com.au feeling concerned about a celebrity’s wellbeing often comes from a genuine place, particularly when people have observed a change

However, noticing someone looks different is not the same as actually knowing what is happening with their health

“It is possible for two things to be true at once: people may feel genuinely concerned when someone they admire appears different,” Bonich said

“And public speculation about that person’s health may still cause them harm

    Expressing concern, without drawing conclusions

“It is important to remember we cannot reliably assess a person’s physical or mental health from photographs, videos or public appearances

“There can be many reasons why someone looks different, and that information remains private unless the person chooses to share it

“A more respectful response is to express care without reaching a conclusion

“We can hope that Ariana has appropriate support around her while avoiding claims that she has a particular illness or speculating she has an eating disorder.”

Bonich said it is also important to avoid analysing individual parts of her body, comparing photographs or repeatedly circulating images intended to demonstrate how she has changed

“Even when framed as concern, this can become intrusive and reinforce the idea that women’s bodies are open to public opinion and inspection,” Bonich added

    The impact on young people

Bonich said there is a lot for young people to admire in the singer: she is extraordinarily talented, creative and hard-working

Grande has also sustained a successful career in a very demanding industry

Bonich said there is a lot for young people to admire in the singer.

“Her openness about difficult experiences and mental health may also help young fans feel less alone and show them that success does not make someone immune to vulnerability,” Bonich said

“At the same time, highly visible celebrities often influence how young people think about beauty, femininity and social acceptance.”

That influence doesn’t come from Grande alone, it is also shaped by social media, advertising and media

“The response to her appearance may be particularly influential,” Bonich said

“When a successful woman’s body becomes the subject of constant commentary, girls learn that how a woman looks remains open to public judgement, regardless of everything else she has achieved

“It would be unfair to hold Ariana responsible for that culture

“We should also pay attention to what young people learn from the way adults, media outlets and online audiences respond to her.”

How do we talk to our kids about Ariana Grande?

Bonich said if your child has noticed a celebrity’s appearance or encountered commentary online, you can use this as an opportunity to have an age-appropriate conversation.

“You might begin by asking what they have seen, what other people are saying, and how it makes them feel,” Bonich advised

“This can help you understand whether the discussion is also affecting how they view their own body

“This is a great opportunity to explain that bodies can change for many reasons and that we cannot tell whether someone is healthy just by looking at them

“You could also reinforce that everyone’s health is private — including public celebrities such as Ariana — so it would not be fair to guess what might be happening

“This is an important boundary distinction.”

If your child has noticed a celebrity’s appearance or encountered commentary online, you can use this as an opportunity to have an age-appropriate conversation.

Parents should also be mindful of how bodies are discussed at home

“Children notice when we criticise our own appearance, celebrate weight loss without context, or comment frequently on other people’s size,” Bonich said

“The aim is not to avoid discussing what your child has noticed, but to guide the conversation towards curiosity, compassion, and respect for another person’s privacy.”

Eating disorders are a complex mental health condition

Young people, regardless of gender, are already exposed to extensive discussion about weight, food and appearance, so avoiding the subject altogether is unlikely to meaningfully protect them

“Instead, there is an important conversation to have about how celebrity culture, social media and narrow beauty standards can contribute to body dissatisfaction and comparison,” Bonich said

“For young people who are already vulnerable, this environment may contribute to an unhealthy relationship with food, exercise, or their body.”

Bonich said it’s important to remember eating disorders are complex mental health conditions

Young people are already exposed to extensive discussion about weight, food and appearance, so avoiding the subject won’t protect them.

“They are not caused by one celebrity or one image, cannot be diagnosed from appearance, and do not have a single visible body type,” Bonich said

“The discussion therefore should not depend on deciding whether Ariana personally has an eating disorder

“Instead, we should examine why certain bodies are treated as ideals, why women’s appearances attract so much scrutiny, and who benefits when girls and women feel dissatisfied with themselves.”

Bonich said the goal is encourage conversations grounded in care, critical thinking and an understanding that a person’s appearance never tells us the whole story

Self Care: Why making your own perfume can be good for your mental health

    By healthylife7August 15, 20260

Perfume is one of the few beauty products you can’t admire in the mirror. Yet it may be the one with the strongest hold on us. A whiff of coconut sunscreen sends me straight back to the ’80s, when I’d slather on SPF 4 and hope for the best. (Spoiler: I burned.) Scent has a…
