New research suggests that eating less sugar during the first 1,000 days of life may have health benefits that last for decades.
Could the amount of sugar you consume before your second birthday affect your health decades later?
A growing body of research suggests the answer may be yes. New studies examining people exposed to lower sugar availability during the first 1,000 days of life from conception until around age two, have found links with a lower risk of cancer later in life and signs of slower biological ageing

The findings are particularly striking because they suggest that some of our earliest food experiences may have consequences that extend far beyond childhood
The first 1,000 days could matter more than we think
Researchers used an unusual moment in British history to investigate the question. They studied people born around the end of the UK’s post-war sugar rationing in September 1953, comparing those whose earliest years occurred when sugar was restricted with those born after restrictions ended
The research analysed tens of thousands of UK Biobank participants, creating what scientists describe as a natural experiment

One study involving 63,819 people found that those exposed to sugar restriction during their first 1,000 days had a significantly lower risk of being diagnosed with early-onset cancer. The strongest association was seen among people exposed to lower sugar availability through approximately their first two years of life, with a 34% lower risk of early-onset cancer in the study analysis. Importantly, researchers found no significant difference in cancer-specific mortality
The possible connection with slower biological ageing
Another study of more than 64,000 participants found that early-life exposure to sugar rationing was associated with a 9% lower incidence of ageing-related diseases and a 19% lower risk of all-cause mortality. Participants exposed to rationing also showed biological ages estimated to be around one to 1.2 years younger across multiple ageing measures
A separate PNAS study also found associations between early-life sugar restriction and lower adult cancer incidence, alongside longer telomeres, one measure linked to biological ageing and lower levels of a marker associated with chronic immune activation
Could early sugar shape lifelong eating habits?
One possible explanation is that our earliest exposure to sweetness may influence our food preferences for decades
The PNAS researchers found that people exposed to sugar restriction early in life appeared to consume less sugar and maintain healthier, more varied diets even decades later. This raises an intriguing possibility: the foods we become accustomed to in infancy and early childhood could help shape our relationship with food throughout adulthood
What parents should and should not take from this
The findings do not mean that eliminating all sugar will prevent cancer or stop ageing. These studies examine historical populations and associations between early-life sugar exposure and later health outcomes

But together, the research adds to growing evidence that the first 1,000 days may be a critical window for long-term health
Perhaps the biggest takeaway is surprisingly simple: the foods children are introduced to early in life may matter far longer than we once imagined
Quick Answers
How does early sugar intake affect adult health outcomes?
Eating less sugar during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception to around age two, may be linked to a lower risk of cancer and slower biological ageing decades later. Early exposure to sugary foods can also cause long-lasting changes in the brain systems that control appetite and eating behaviour
What are the long-term effects of sugar rationing on health?
Eating less sugar during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception to around age two, has been linked to a lower risk of cancer and slower biological ageing decades later. One study found that individuals exposed to sugar restriction during this period had a 34% lower risk of early-onset cancer. Another study indicated a 9% lower incidence of ageing-related diseases and a 19% lower risk of all-cause mortality for those exposed to early-life sugar rationing
Could reducing sugar before age two prevent future diseases?
Reducing sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception to age two, may be linked to a lower risk of cancer and slower biological ageing decades later. One study found that individuals exposed to sugar restriction during this period had a 34% lower risk of early-onset cancer
