Amazing Race strengthens student leadership skills and mental well-being awareness

    By Arnold Nkuna

Lebogang Mogale, SDO of Ga-Rankuwa campusThe 2026 City of Tshwane Amazing Race that took place over the weekend forms part of an experiential learning programme designed to strengthen leadership, teamwork and personal development. Facilitated by the Directorate of Student Governance and Leadership Development, the initiative supports students as they transition into university life and develop skills needed to navigate academic and social challenges

Lebogang Mogale, Student Development Officer, described the Amazing Race as one of the Directorate’s premier programmes. He said the initiative creates opportunities for personal growth while helping students develop practical leadership skills

“The Amazing Race is not simply a recreational activity. It provides an experiential learning environment where students apply problem-solving, teamwork and creativity in real-life situations,” said Mogale

This year’s programme adopted the theme Mental Health, Connection and Wellbeing, highlighting the importance of creating spaces where students can engage openly with issues affecting their wellbeing

Mogale said mental health is a significant societal issue that also affects university students. He emphasised the need for higher education institutions to prioritise awareness, education and support around mental health

The programme extends beyond physical participation by incorporating learning opportunities that encourage students to reflect on mental health while engaging in activities that promote collaboration, connection and leadership

Phakisho Mehlape, SDO of Soshanguve CampusPhakisho Mehlape, Student Development Officer, said growing numbers of students are speaking openly about mental health challenges, reinforcing the need for supportive environments where individuals feel comfortable seeking help

“We need to create a conducive environment for people to be able to come forward,” said Mehlape. “Awareness and open conversations are important steps towards addressing mental health challenges.”

By combining leadership development, experiential learning and social awareness, the Amazing Race gives students an opportunity to build practical skills while engaging with an issue that affects university communities and society more broadly.

The initiative reflects TUT’s commitment to holistic student development by encouraging students to learn beyond traditional classroom settings. Through teamwork, problem-solving and meaningful engagement, participants develop confidence as leaders while contributing to a culture that values connection, wellbeing and mental health awareness
