TULSA, Okla. –
Special Strong, a fitness provider specializing in adaptive exercise programs for people with mental, physical and cognitive disabilities, is opening its first South Tulsa location later this month
The new franchise, owned by Suzanne and Mike Beckner, will celebrate its grand opening from 4 to 7 p.m. July 23 at Courts & Commons, 7921 E. 119th Drive in Bixby
The Beckners said they were inspired to open the business after spending more than a year searching for a consistent fitness program for their son, Anthony, and discovering limited options for adults and children with disabilities
Suzanne Beckner is a registered nurse with more than a decade of experience in geriatric rehabilitation. Mike Beckner is a former college athlete and coach. Together, they have served for more than 20 years as Special Olympics coaches and volunteers
Special Strong offers adaptive fitness programs designed for children, teens and adults with a range of physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and other conditions
The company was founded in 2016 by Daniel Stein, who said he created the organization after overcoming his own learning disability, mood disorder and autoimmune disease. Since then, the company has expanded through a franchise model offering adaptive fitness services in communities across the country
The July 23 grand opening will include opportunities for community members to tour the facility and learn more about the organization’s programs. Organizers said both indoor and covered outdoor space will be available for guests
