Rural residents face unique challenges when it comes to accessing behavioral healthcare services. In response to this, Michigan hospitals are finding innovative ways to remove barriers and help those in need across their communities

The teams at McKenzie Health System launched the Peace of Mind Clinic in 2024 to expand access to behavioral health services in rural Sanilac County where residents previously had limited access to psychiatric care. Since opening, it has served hundreds of patients from more than 40 rural communities

The clinic provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for patients of all ages, addressing conditions such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder

Brandy Trepkowski and Rhea Merriman, McKenzie Health System

“Everyone deserves peace of mind, reassurance that their feelings matter and the comfort of knowing help is available close to home,” said Brandy Trepkowski, MSN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, McKenzie Health System. “We offer diagnosis and medication treatment for patients of all ages, ensuring they can get the help they need without requiring referrals.”

Trepkowski, like many rural providers, recognized a significant need for mental health services in the community. Her dedication to learning and passion for helping others led her to pursue further training in psychiatric mental health

“This career path chose me,” said Trepkowski. “I saw more and more people with untreated conditions and realized there was a need I could fulfill.”

The Peace of Mind Clinic was developed through internal workforce investments and close coordination with community mental health partners to ensure services complement existing reuction in hospital encounters for behavioral health conditions

“Delivering exceptional care means listening to those you serve,” said Steve Barnett, DHA, CRNA, FACHE, president, CEO, McKenzie Health System. “In rural communities like ours, behavioral healthcare isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Too many individuals and families face long wait times, transportation barriers, or simply a lack of options when they need help. We’re determined to change that.”

The McKenzie Health System team received a 2026 Ludwig Community Benefit Award for this work, presented annually to MHA members working collaboratively to improve the health and well-being of Michigan residents
