Novo Nordisk has received approval for its weight-loss pill, Wegovy, from the European Commission, which has also given the green light for the marketing of a high-dose version of the weight-loss drug as an injection, Novo Nordisk announced in a filing with the stock exchange
The approval follows a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP)
The Wegovy tablet is approved for the treatment of severe obesity, as well as for people who are obese and have at least one comorbid condition
The tablet is already approved in the US, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain
“The European Commission’s approval of Wegovy as a once-daily tablet provides yet another important treatment option for people living with severe obesity,” said Novo’s CEO, Mike Doustdar, in the announcement
“Severe obesity is a serious chronic disease, and this option can make a real difference. For many people, a tablet may be a simpler and more acceptable way to start and continue treatment. This is more than a regulatory milestone—it’s a step closer to better and more lasting health for people with severe obesity and a strong societal response to one of Europe’s most significant health challenges,” he continued
Novo plans to launch its Wegovy tablet in several countries during 2026, the company states
At the same time, Novo has received approval for a high-dose version of Wegovy as an injection with a dose of 7.2 mg
