The Central MA Regional Health Department (CMRHD) is advising all residents to enhance their personal protection protocols due to an increased regional risk of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Shrewsbury. Implementing proactive community safety measures is essential.

Taking immediate, deliberate actions to minimize exposure can significantly curb the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses in the community.

Protect Yourself: Practice the “5 D’s”

To minimize your exposure to mosquito bites, the health department urges everyone to strictly practice the 5 D’s of personal protection:

    • DRAIN: Frequently empty standing water from birdbaths, gutters, flowerpots, toys, and pet dishes to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds.
    • DEET: Apply EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, permethrin, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when spending time outdoors.
    • DAWN & DUSK: Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity hours, specifically around dawn and dusk.
    • DRESS: Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks, when outdoors to minimize exposed skin.

    Mosquito Control Treatment Schedule

The Central MA Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) personnel are actively responding to residential concerns and conducting targeted applications within Shrewsbury

    • Upcoming August Spray Schedule: Standard neighborhood response operations are scheduled for:August 4, 11, 18 and 25, 2026*.

*Please note that all application dates are tentative and subject to adjustment based on weather patterns and localized mosquito activity levels

    Upcoming Community Mosquito Education Event

To further equip your household against mosquito-borne risks, the community is invited to an interactive educational session hosted by the CMMCP. This free public event will cover essential details regarding mosquito biology, local control techniques, and advanced personal protection methods
