Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is adding an unexpected title to his résumé. The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched The Real Food Show, a new White House-backed online series designed to encourage Americans to prepare healthy, affordable meals at home.

But while the show’s focus is on salmon cakes and budget-friendly recipes, much of the conversation has centered on Kennedy’s long-documented history of unusual eating habits, including his past comments about collecting roadkill

The debut marks the latest chapter in Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” campaign, which has already sparked debate over revised federal dietary guidelines and his outspoken views on food

What Is The Real Food Show?

According to the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services, The Real Food Show aims to make healthy cooking more accessible for everyday families by showcasing affordable recipes made with whole ingredients.

The official description states: “Healthy, affordable cooking [is] simple and accessible for every American.” The White House adds that the series is: “Inspired by President Trump’s Make America Healthy Again agenda, Secretary Kennedy is bringing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to life and showing that cooking with real food can be practical, approachable, and affordable for every family.”

Officials say each episode will feature recipes designed to cost less than $5 per serving whenever possible, alongside nutrition advice and appearances from celebrity chefs.

The First Episode Features Chef Andrew Gruel

The premiere episode pairs Kennedy with celebrity chef Andrew Gruel. Together, they prepare crispy salmon cakes served with an apple, white bean, and greens salad while discussing healthier alternatives to ultra-processed foods.

The recipe was selected to demonstrate that nutritious meals can be made on a modest budget using whole ingredients.

Kennedy said in announcing the project: “The simple act of preparing and sharing a meal has always brought families and communities together.”

He added: “The Real Food Show reminds Americans that healthy eating starts at home and that cooking with real food can be simple, affordable, and within reach for every family.”

New Dietary Guidelines Continue to Divide Experts

The cooking series also serves as a public showcase for the Trump administration’s updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Under Kennedy’s leadership, the guidelines replaced the familiar food pyramid with a new model that places meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables at the top while reducing the emphasis on grains

Supporters have welcomed the stronger focus on minimally processed foods. However, some nutrition experts have questioned the increased emphasis on red meat, whole milk, and saturated fats, arguing that it departs from decades of cardiovascular research.

Kennedy’s Unusual Food History Is Back in the Headlines

Despite the show’s family-friendly message, Kennedy’s personal food history has become impossible for many observers to ignore. Earlier this year, Kennedy told USA Today: “I am on a carnivore diet. I only eat meat or fermented foods.”

His history with unusual foods extends much further. Investigative journalist Isabel Vincent‘s recent book revisits Kennedy’s past accounts of collecting roadkill for research and feeding some of it to his birds. One of Kennedy’s own journal entries from 2001 reads: “I was standing in front of my parked car on I-684 cutting the pe*is out of a roadkilled raccoon, thinking how weird some of my family members have turned out to be.”

Those anecdotes, combined with Kennedy’s previous admission that he kept roadkill in his freezer, have resurfaced alongside coverage of his new culinary venture, prompting widespread commentary online.
