Rescue teams rushed on Aug 27 to find hundreds of people missing on the Nepal-Tibet border.

SINGAPORE – Following deadly flash floods in Nepal, Singaporeans there have been advised to exercise a high degree of caution, remain vigilant, monitor local news and follow the instructions of local authorities

In an advisory issued on Aug 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) urged Singaporeans to avoid the flood-affected areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan

They should also stay away from rivers, riverbanks, bridges and low-lying areas

There may be disruptions to roads, transport, communications and essential services in affected areas, the ministry said

Travellers should check local road and weather conditions before their journeys, it added

Rescue teams rushed on Aug 27 to find hundreds of people missing on the Nepal-Tibet border in flash floods and landslides that killed at least 160 and swept away entire villages

Experts said the disaster may have been caused by a glacial collapse that sent a flow of debris engulfing areas along the way

At least 341 foreigners have been reported missing. Among them are a group of 47 hikers, including two Singaporeans, travelling with tour company Himalayan Glacier

MFA said Singaporeans travelling to or residing in Nepal are strongly encouraged to eRegister with the ministry, purchase comprehensive travel insurance, and remain in contact with their family, hotels, trekking agencies, guides or local tour operators

Those who require consular assistance should contact the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi or the 24-hour Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office
