    • Registered dietitians debunk common health food myths that continue to circulate online.
    • Timing of meals matters more than the time on the clock when it comes to weight gain.
    • Natural sweeteners are not necessarily healthier than table sugar, despite marketing claims.

Nutrition advice travels fast online, and accuracy rarely keeps up with the pace. Registered dietitians report hearing the same handful of debunked claims from patients and followers over and over again, no matter how many times the actual research says otherwise

“There are so many variables to consider here,” dietitian Leslie Bonci told Food Network of one especially stubborn myth. That kind of nuance rarely survives a viral post

None of these myths are new, but they keep circulating anyway. Here are the health food myths dietitians most wish people would finally let go of

Eating Late Makes You Gain Weight

The idea that eating after 7 p.m. automatically leads to weight gain ignores just how much timing varies by culture and lifestyle. Plenty of countries eat dinner well after 9 p.m. without any resulting health crisis, and what actually matters is the type and amount of food eaten, not the clock on the wall

Fruit Has Too Much Sugar To Be Healthy

Fruit regularly gets lumped in with candy and soda because of its sugar content, but that framing misses the fiber, vitamins and water that come packaged along with it. That fiber slows down how quickly the sugar hits the bloodstream, producing a completely different effect on the body than sugar eaten on its own

    Natural Sweeteners Beat Table Sugar

Honey, maple syrup, agave and date sugar all sound healthier than plain table sugar, largely thanks to marketing rather than actual nutrition. According to a breakdown from AOL, these natural sweeteners do carry small amounts of antioxidants, but the body still processes the sugar itself in essentially the same way

Only Shop The Edges Of The Store

Sticking strictly to the perimeter of the grocery store has become a popular shortcut for eating healthier, but it overlooks plenty of genuinely nutritious foods stocked in the middle aisles. Canned beans, frozen vegetables, oats and whole grains all live in those center aisles, and skipping them entirely does not actually make a cart healthier

    Detox Diets Actually Work

Juice cleanses and detox diets are marketed as a way to flush toxins and jumpstart weight loss, but the body already has a liver and kidneys built for exactly that job Any weight lost during a short detox is typically water weight, and it tends to return once regular eating resumes

    Healthy Eating Requires Perfection

Many people believe healthy eating means following flawless, rigid rules, and that any de balanced eating patterns over strict, all or nothing approaches, according to registered dietitians at Abbott, since consistency and variety tend to be far more sustainable long term

None of these myths are likely to disappear from group chats and social feeds anytime soon. Still, understanding the actual science behind them is a good first step toward eating in a way that is based on evidence rather than whatever claim happened to go viral this week
