The Pursuit of Legacy May Be Burning Us Out

    Key points

    • Modern culture pressures us to turn hobbies into monetized brands, creating anxiety over leaving a legacy.
    • Cultivating a quiet ego shifts focus away from status toward pursuits that are intrinsically meaningful.
    • Releasing our grip on immortality allows us to enjoy the present moment without needing a permanent monument.

We all have that one thing that we love to do. Some people like baking, others like collecting records or dressing up like superheroes. For others, like Ed, it’s throwing boomerangs

Ed belongs to a dedicated global community that takes the sport so seriously that its members recently competed in the World Boomerang Championships in Indonesia. Watching these competitors master a niche craft is remarkable. It takes baseline focus, hundreds of hours of practice, and dedication to the flight

For most of us, though, throwing a boomerang starts as something far simpler: heading out to an open field, tossing a curved piece of wood into the air, and watching it carve a quiet arc through the sky before returning to your hand. It’s an invitation to just enjoy the moment

In modern culture, enjoying a hobby for its own sake is rarely treated as enough. First comes the pressure to be great, then to record it, then to build an audience around it, and eventually to monetize it into a side hustle. But underlying all of this optimization is a deeper, more insidious anxiety: the modern obsession with leaving a legacy

Someone (probably not Teddy Roosevelt) once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” While throwing with his boomerang community is a peak experience for Ed, he tries to learn from the true legends of the sport without expecting to imitate them. The key is not to be great but to be better

For years, very few people knew of Ed’s interest in boomerangs. When he helped some students start a boomerang club and then reentered the competitive world, he became known (at least at his university) as the boomerang professor. It is part of his personal brand, whether he likes it or not (he’s okay with it). Sometimes we can’t help but be marked by what we love. Now, though, the pressure he feels to live up to the mark adds an unwelcome seriousness to a playful sport

Why We Want to Be Remembered

What drives the desire to be remembered to create a legacy? Social psychologists point to Terror Management Theory (TMT); the idea that the inevitability of our death profoundly impacts our thoughts, behavior and motivation

As a reaction to TMT, we create “immortality projects” in the hope some piece of us will survive after we are long gone. Our modern obsession with “hustle” and productivity helps drive this anxiety. Corporations add to this by reframing work as “legacy building” so we get caught up in trying to outrun our own mortality, which leads to burnout

The Freedom of the “Quiet Ego”

What’s the alternative? Positive psychologists Heidi Wayment and Jack Bauer proposed a construct called the Quiet Ego

A Quiet Ego isn’t focused on status-seeking, clout, or chasing likes, but it also doesn’t sacrifice self-worth. Instead, it has us step off the treadmill of constant self-promotion and focus on things that are intrinsically meaningful and motivating to us

Studies show that people who cultivate a Quiet Ego enjoy higher psychological resilience, and deeper, more authentic self-compassion. They just enjoy the experience of doing them

So how do we actually quiet the noise and build a life that feels deeply satisfying without needing to broadcast or immortalize it? It starts with unlearning the idea that quiet lives are wasted lives

    Practical Forgettability

If you’re ready to drop the exhausting burden of needing to be “extraordinary,” here are four concrete ways to practice the freedom of forgettability:

    • Treat Work as a Craft, Not an Identity:Lower the existential stakes of your career. You can do excellent, painstaking work today without demanding that your job title serve as your biography’s opening line.
    • Embrace “Anonymous Impact”: Practice doing good things like helping a colleague, fixing a broken system, supporting a cause without posting about it or needing your name attached to the donor list.
    • Reclaim the Freedom to Fail:When you aren’t trying to build a permanent monument to yourself, mistakes are no longer existential threats. They’re just data points.
    • Cultivate “Quiet Hobbies”: Keep at least one passion entirely unmonetized, unrecorded, and offline; your own private boomerang field that exists for your eyes only.

    Releasing the Grip

In the physics of boomerang flight, everything depends on the release. If you hold on too tight, or throw it with a rigid, desperate grip, the aerodynamics fall apart and the boomerang plummets straight into the dirt. It only lifts, arcs, and returns when you let it go cleanly

Maybe the ultimate act of quiet rebellion today is to reclaim the things we love simply because they bring us joy in the moment. Paint a picture no one will ever scroll past, master an instrument you only play when the house is empty, or bake a loaf of sourdough that gets eaten in ten minutes and never makes it onto an Instagram story

You don’t need a monument, an audience, or a global stage to justify your time on this planet. The worth of a life is measured by how fully you felt it while you were here

Cheer for those who reach the global stage. Marvel at their focus and celebrate their niche mastery. But remember: you don’t owe the world an extraordinary performance, a personal brand, or a slot in the history books

Sometimes, throwing a boomerang into an empty field and watching it return to your hand is more than enough. Not because it’s going to change the world, but simply because, for a few quiet seconds, it felt wonderful to catch it

Live your life, enjoy the flight while it lasts, and grant yourself the sweet, peaceful permission to be forgotten
