What to know about Chrissy Metz and GLP-1

Chrissy Metz is opening up about her decision to use aGLP-1 medication after years of skepticism about the popular weight loss drugs. Here is what New Jersey residents need to know

The “This Is Us” star, 45, revealed that she recently began taking a GLP-1 as part of her health journey, saying the medication has helped with persistent thoughts about food while also improving her mobility and reducing joint pain. Metz is also partnering with digital health company Ro, a telehealth company that offers online appointments and at-home treatment deliveries

“I was very skeptical of starting a GLP-1 for a very long time,” Metz told E! News. “I’m talking probably six years, since really COVID, when people were sort of talking about it. I’m just very diligent about what and how things work within the body, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what that’s gonna be like.'”

Her change of heart came after a friend’s “thorough research” led Metz to realize the medication could help her based on her own family health history

In a statement provided to People magazine, Metz she’s “not getting any younger,” and after years of trying options such as diets and therapy, nothing seemed to offer the long-term results she had been looking for

“I’m in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I’ve tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me,” Metz told the outlet. Since starting the medication, Metz said one of the biggest changes has been experiencing less “food noise,” a term commonly used to describe persistent or intrusive thoughts about eating

“It’s so nice not to be obsessing about what I’m going to have every minute, even as I’m still consuming the meal. I just vilified food for so long because I was taught that it was bad, and you shouldn’t eat this or that,” the actress said

The actress said the changes have extended beyond her relationship with food. She has also noticed less joint pain and inflammation and said she is able to move around more easily, something that has helped while performing on stage. Metz is currently starring as Angélique in the Broadway production of “& Juliet.”

“Listen, when it comes to me, everybody is judgy,” the “Breakthrough” actress said. “It doesn’t matter what I do. Before, people were like ‘Why isn’t she on a GLP-1?’ and now they’re going to know I’m on it and be like, ‘Why is she on a GLP-1?'”

The actress said she has learned to tune out outside opinions about her health, noting that critics aren’t privy to her medical history or the health issues that run in her family. “My life is my life, and I have to do what’s best for me,” Metz added

This isn’t the first time the Broadway star has opened up about her weight. During an appearance on “The Jamie Kern Lima Show” podcast the star reflected on being subjected to “mental, physical, [and] emotional abuse” from her stepfather. In her 2018 memoir “This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today,” Metz wrote: “My body seemed to offend him, but he couldn’t help but stare, especially when I was eating. He never punched my face. Just my body, the thing that offended him so much. He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm, and yanked my wrist. He would hit me if he thought I looked at him wrong.”
