Green tea is enjoyed for its health benefits. But not many people might know that it may also help with depression, which affects millions globally, leading to physical and emotional distress

In his new post on Instagram, Eric Berg, a US-based nutritionist, shared that green tea is the second most consumed drink after water. “Research shows that drinking just 3 cups a week can reduce feelings of depression by 21%. And if you drink 4 cups daily? That number increases to an impressive 51%,” he said

Benefits of green tea for brain health

According to Berg, green tea is loaded with bioactive compounds that support brain health. Drinking it enhances cognitive function and memory, supports mood stabilisation, and regulates cortisol, the stress hormone

The power of its key ingredient: L-Theanine

L-theanine, an amino acid naturally present in green tea, may help improve mood, ease stress, and support neurogenesis: the formation of new neurons. It helps promote a state of calm focus

    How exercise can boost results

Physical movement is not just good for your body, but also for your mental health. If you incorporate regular exercise into your routine, it can amplify the benefits of green tea. “One study revealed that regular exercise showed similar results to antidepressant medication like Zoloft. High-intensity interval training is particularly effective,” Berg added

    The role of Vitamin D

The role of Vitamin D cannot be underestimated. It plays an important role in regulating mood. “When sunlight is scarce, many experience “the blues.” Avoid Vitamin D deficiency to support your mood,” he noted

    What should you do?

According to Berg, including green tea in your daily routine can support your mental health. Additionally, you should ensure you get regular exercise and maintain healthy vitamin D levels. This combination can be an excellent natural approach for those with depression
