The reason Lenny Kravitz works out in leather pants makes sense

Lenny Kravitz has long turned heads by lifting weights in leather pants, denim and boots instead of traditional gym clothes. While the look has become part of his public persona, the rocker says there’s a simple reason behind it
In a new interview for “Men’s Health’s Music + Muscle” issue, the 62-year-old musician said he trains in the same clothes he wears onstage because it fits his lifestyle. Between touring, recording and traveling, Kravitz said dressing that way allows him to squeeze in workouts wherever his schedule permits
“I perform onstage in leather, denim, whatever, so those are the pants I wear to train,” Kravitz told the magazine. “It also means I can fit in a workout anytime, anywhere.”
The clothing also serves as a built-in fitness tracker, People reported. Rather than relying on wearable technology, Kravitz said he pays attention to how his signature pants fit. If they start feeling snug, he knows it’s time to tighten up his routine
‘The pants don’t lie’
Kravitz said he gauges his fitness by whether he can comfortably fit into his 28-inch pants
“If my pants are a little tight, I know I’m getting outta’ shape,” he told Men’s Health, adding that friend Denzel Washington gave him a favorite saying: “The pants don’t lie.”
The singer previously explained the wardrobe choice during a 2024 interview with Variety, saying he often heads straight to the gym between appointments instead of changing clothes. He said the leather pants are for strength training, while cardio workouts call for sweatpants because of the heavier sweating
Kravitz also pushed back against the idea that the outfit is a publicity stunt, saying it’s simply how he lives
Chasing a lean physique, not bulk
Kravitz said his goal has never been to build the biggest physique possible. Instead, he aims for an athletic frame inspired by martial arts legend Bruce Lee
“I want a very narrow silhouette, more like Spider-Man meets Bruce Lee,” he told “Men’s Health,” praising Lee’s lean muscle and fluid movement
According to the magazine, Kravitz typically trains five or six days a week with longtime trainer Dodd Romero. His 45- to 60-minute workouts combine high-repetition weight training with hundreds of core exercises designed to maintain strength, mobility and muscle tone while avoiding unnecessary bulk
Fitness built on discipline
Kravitz also emphasized that his physique comes without performance-enhancing drugs
“All this is natural: no peptides, no human growth hormone, no testosterone,” he told Men’s Health. While acknowledging those options are a personal choice, Kravitz said he prefers to rely on exercise, nutrition and consistency
The musician has often credited his late grandfather, Albert Roker, with shaping that mindset. In a 2024 interview with USA TODAY, Kravitz recalled watching his grandfather remain remarkably active well into his later years, including riding a bicycle for hours and embracing new challenges
Now, Kravitz said he views age as less important than the choices people make over time. Maintaining health, he said, is about discipline, consistency and building habits that last, whether that means hitting the gym in sweatpants or leather jeans
